She is a great leader even when everyone is against her, she is capable, she can fend for her own (in a realistic way). Raithe and Malcolm are hilarious together, Persephone is an incredibly strong woman in a non-showy way. They are diverse, there are many smart and powerful women in high places, everyone is flawed. What really makes this story great are the characters. It’s about the magic, the politics, the different races… This book felt more real than the middle-grade books I usually enjoy most, but still remains fantasy in its purest form. Actually, there are no sex scenes and barely any romance in this story (so far), and I LOVE it so much. What this book does great for me is that it manages to be ‘grown-up’, without having to include extreme violence, gore and loads of sex. This book was comforting, yet refreshing. The writing style was simple yet wonderful. Although you don’t feel for the ‘bad guys’, you do know and maybe somewhat understand their reasoning.

You follow different characters, from both sides of the conflict. The story was fast-paced and action-packed, yet there was also a decent amount of humour and plenty of world building.
